Jeremy Hackett is an icon of posh Brit-chic. With his label " Hackett London "he created for gentlemen worldwide an international brand that interprets the English new dress code with a wink. In an interview with the gentleman's Blog explains "Mr. Classic "the shopping philosophy of men, why he has an aversion to black suits and what tennis champion he would like to see more in Hackett mode.
The Gentleman Blog in an interview with Jeremy Hackett
Mr. Hackett, you once said, men are afraid of fashion and, therefore, better clothing should not change too much. Why men leave calculated in terms of fashion the courage?I think men do not necessarily fear, but they are careful. You are not sure of their cause and therefore would rather not want to venture too far, not to look sometime ridiculous.
No trace of experimentation accordingly?
Jeremy Hackett: Most men really do not want too much to stand out. A famous proverb says: "A gentleman to dress appropriately to not be noticed." Of course there are those fashion types who want to make a statement with their look, but most of them enter our shop and have no interest in such fashion .
Tends to not just when you have no idea of fashion, to the masses and thus to follow the trend?
Jeremy Hackett: It depends on the man, some want that, but the majority do not. Many come to us and say, "I have this jacket last winter purchased from you and would like the same model again, or something like that. "So they are, me too. A customer bought 78 times tweed suits with me. All had exactly the same design, just different materials. He can build an entire closet to accommodate them all. I only have three tweed suits.
"Never change a winning team", or was it just force of habit?
Jeremy Hackett: I think that if men have even found something you like, they get used to it, it's a bear and even if it is a bit old and worn, it becomes her favorite piece of clothing.
Is Money helpful for a good hand while shopping?
Jeremy Hackett: It's not so much about having money, but much more about having an eye for fashion. It also depends on what you spend your money please. When I used to work in shops, I have half of my salary paid back, because I've bought so many things there myself. I would rather buy a good suit than three convenient. It is a question of priorities.
What apart from cheap suits would also never in your closet?
Jeremy Hackett: I'm not so keen on brown. This simple brown. A brown suit or a brown jacket would be nothing for me. Brown shoes are ok. And I do not wear black.
Black is considered but as the most stylish color at all. Do you have anything in black?
Jeremy Hackett: I have a tuxedo jacket and a robe in black, that's all. I do not like black suits or sweater. For me, almost everything is navy blue. I have a ton navy blue sweater.
Why is the bar navy blue?
Jeremy Hackett: I just like it.
A look through your shop is sufficient to determine that about 1/3 of the collection is fixed in navy blue hand. Customers share your taste?
Jeremy Hackett: Our most popular sweater and our best selling polo shirt are both navy blue. At Prada or Gucci black would probably be the dominant color, but Hackett is a navy blue brand. What we stand for. If you want a black suit, then go to Prada. If you want a decent navy suit, buy it at Hackett!
Everybody wears black suits, what's wrong with that?
Jeremy Hackett: It's ok if others wear a black suit. However, if I am wearing a black suit, I feel as if I wanted to be fashionable. Not that I'm old-fashioned, but in black it feels to be wanted. The majority of our customers want to wear no black.
How can you know that when you offer nothing in black?
Jeremy Hackett: We had mistakenly times a few black sweater in a delivery and my seller she wanted to return. I thought we should sort it and see how customers react. They watched for three months the store.
You already have a store in Munich and Hamburg. Will we soon be a Hackett London store in the German capital Berlin fashion find?
Jeremy Hackett: Berlin is a black city. Hamburg is a blue city, it is classic, at least from my feeling here.
Hackett London is one of the main sponsors of the tennis tournament at Hamburg Rothbaum. Besides, you also sponsor Polo Events and Been Rugby involved. Why are Hackett London and sports such a good team?
Jeremy Hackett: Many of our customers track or operate these sports. In England there is also for all occasions a dress code . When people go to the country, for Polo or go to a wedding, then they dress accordingly. Our aim was, they dress up for the occasion and add that certain something.
The designs are therefore very cultural program.
Jeremy Hackett: In our fashion consciousness, plays a big role on how the British in Europe are seen. Everything is slightly revamped and overstated, as one would actually wear it in England. But this bit more is not only good for the Europeans, but also with the Americans and the Japanese.
As you can hear in the Gentlemen of tennis.
Jeremy Hackett: Rafael Nadal and David Ferrer wear every now and then Hackett. Roger Federer was shopping a couple of times in our shops in Zurich and Geneva. Unfortunately, he is bound to Nike, he would look great in Hackett!
